TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ BENNY SOTO # 088 - PART 1
For Benny Soto, it began, as it has for many New York club land veterans, with a visit to 84 King Street in downtown Manhattan. He says, “I had already been going out, but the first clubbing experience that really mattered was the Paradise Garage…just walking in there, it looked different, it sounded different, it felt different. As soon as I walked in, I knew I was home.” For Soto, then a poor kid from the South Bronx, the Garage opened up a whole new world. It was through the club that he met, and befriended, the late Keith Haring, eventually serving as the iconic artist’s studio assistant. It also expanded his aural horizons: “Because of the way that Larry Levan played,” Soto says, “I became more musically open-minded.” But perhaps importantly, the Garage provided an avenue for escape. “Back then, I didn’t have much joy in my life,” he admits, ‘Clubbing gave me a way to get away. Places like the Garage, though they were primarily gay, were so inclusive; it didn’t really matter who you were, what mattered was the freedom that you could find there.” And that feeling—that passion for freedom, both musically and personally—would set Soto on a path that has led to a lifetime in club land. He had no idea that it would also lead to a career, but even in those early days, he recalls, “I was very curious. If I was at a club, I would be checking out the sound and looking at the lights, trying to see how it all comes together -it was like a Broadway show, except the show was the crowd itself.” Eventually he secured a gig doing odd jobs at another iconic address, 6 Hubert Street, only blocks away from the Garage. The spot had once housed Area and Club Shelter; during Soto’s time there, it was Vinyl, home to the iconic Body & Soul. It was Body & Soul resident Danny Krivit who convinced Soto to take the next step. “He said to me, ‘I think you should be a promoter. People like you, and you have great energy. You’d be good at it.’ Of course,” Soto adds, “I had no idea what ‘being a promoter’ even meant!” Listen to him tell you what he learned and how you should be..

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ MIKE DUNN # 080 - PART 1
Chicago house music legend Mike Dunn, has been DJing and producing music for over twenty years. Hailing from Englewood, Chicago, Mike started out DJing at the local block parties that took place playing disco, funk, soul and prototype Chicago house tracks. “I was one of the first cats bringing two reel-to-reels and spinning with them at the parties. I was bringing out two Pioneer 707s, doing the Hummingbird, Jacks, The Courtyard, etc. I’d bring a drum machine, too. I would make tracks right then as the party was going. Way before my guys Daft Punk and all of them were doing live gigs, I was doing that at the basement parties – just bringing drum machines and doing everything live.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES™ W/ GREG WILSON # 023 - PART 2
Greg Wilson (born 1960) is an English DJ and producer associated with both the early 1980s electro scene in Manchester and the current disco / re-edit movement. He's also a writer / commentator on dance music and popular culture.
1993–2003
The following decade was something of a wilderness period for Wilson, but in 1994 he revisited his electro-funk past, compiling the Classic Electro Mastercuts album. This would generate a small number of DJ bookings, his first in 10 years, in promotion of the album.
In 1996, he was part of a collective of DJs and musicians who promoted a series of nights called The Monastery in Birkenhead, Liverpool and London. A mix, The Monastic Mix, was the last he ever put together on reel-to-reel.
2003–present
DJ comeback
Alerted by the lack of documentation of the specialist black music scene that had helped shape contemporary dance culture, he announced the website electrofunkroots.co.uk in 2003. The site documents the early '80s era, what led up to it and what came out of it. Offers of DJ bookings followed and on 20 December 2003 Wilson made his DJ comeback at a night called Music Is Better in Manchester club The Attic. This was the launchpad that re-ignited Wilson's DJ career 20 years on from his retirement. As his popularity increased, he appeared throughout the UK, Europe and the world, gaining newfound followers from a new, younger generation of clubbers.
In 2005, his re-edits compilation Credit to the Edit, released on the Tirk Recordings label, was the catalyst for his international success, helping to establish him, once again, as a scene leader.
Apart from working as a DJ and remixer, Wilson has written on various aspects of dance / black culture with articles published in magazines / webzines including Wax Poetics, Clash, Grand Slam, Strobelight Honey and Discopia. His Discotheque Archives series for DJ Magazine ran for 25 editions between 2016-2018.
His blog, Being a DJ, was launched in June 2010, and his observations on various aspects of club culture are now an online touchstone for dance music enthusiasts. Wilson has also been interviewed for a number of books, TV and film projects focusing on the history of club culture.
Musical output
Credit to the Edit Volume 2 was released in November 2009, with tour dates throughout the following months in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and the U.S. to promote the album. The series returned in April 2018 with Credit to the Edit Volume 3 and during that year Wilson became more active in the studio, working on various remix and re-edits projects, including some collaborations with his son Ché Wilson, the first of which to be released was a remix of "Out the Window" by Australian band Confidence Man, released on Heavenly Records.
Wilson has produced a series of documentative podcasts, Time Capsule, Random Influences and Early 80s Floorfillers, as well as the long-running blog series, Living to Music, where people were encouraged to listen to a monthly album selection in their home environment. This served to influence other related listening events, including Colleen Murphy's Classic Album Sundays audiophile sessions.
Commencing in 2009, Wilson had built a strong following on SoundCloud with regular uploads of DJ mixes, mainly live recordings, with over six and a half million plays up to 2019.
In addition to his DJ work, Wilson has given talks on music and dance culture at numerous events including Afro Modern at Tate Liverpool, Vintage at London Southbank, Salon at Standon Calling and Festival N°6 and alongside legendary figures Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder at ADE in Amsterdam.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ CINIMIN # 112 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA
Born and raised in the small town of Benoni, South Africa, The Cassim brothers Kyle and Austin have been obsessed with House music since they were young boys. Growing up in a household driven by dance, disco and house music it was inevitable that they would become Djs. But being a Dj wasn’t enough - they wanted to play their own music - music that they believed in, music that awakened their souls. Thus, in 2015 CINIMIN was born.
A House music duo that would headline the likes of Ultra South Africa, H2O Africa, Rage Festival, Sabor Festival (Mozambique) and close to all night-clubs and events in Southern Africa. In the last 4 years they have won a DMA (Dance Music Award) for ‘best dance record of the year’ and they have had not one, but 4 top 40 radio hits. Their recent hit “DURO” reached number 6 on the national top 40 on 5fm - South Africa’s most loved commercial radio station.
There are many dance Djs and producers around the world, but what makes CINIMIN really stand out is their infectious energy and passion on stage. Whether they are playing to 50 people or 14000 people, they have this way of connecting with the crowd. Their synergy and relationship behind the CDJs is unmatched. The way they move in synchronicity and play with the crowd is something you have to witness in person
If you have ever heard a CINIMIN record before you would know that it was made with one purpose in mind - TO MAKE PEOPLE DANCE! Every track that the boys write is made with the intention to make the dance floor shake!

TRUE HOUSE STORIES™ W/ TYREE COOPER # 034 - PART 3
So many of Tyree’s original productions were being used on huge smash tracks such as Crystal Waters, Tyree decided to walk away from the music industry and earned more money delivering pizza's than he did producing some of the most incredible, world famous tracks ever to be made in the Hip House scene. Hear about the time Tyree met the artist Prince in Holland and refused to believe it was him. Listen as Tyree reminisces about performing on Top of The Pops - thanks to help from Pete Tong. Tyree toured with MTV in 1990 with other bands such as De La Soul, Sybil, Betty Boo, Wee Papa Girl Rappers. Such a funny but also shocking ’True House Stories’ show from the incredible Tyree Cooper who is so talented yet never recognised or paid fairly. This finally led to Tyree taking DJ International Records to court where he was finally recompensated for the money he had always been denied due to always being informed that his productions had been ‘Flops’ by the label owners.

In October Andy Williams put together a proper gathering called Vocal Booth Weekender. When he started to organize the dates back in the beginning of 2022 he asked if I would come and have a discussion panel at the event. We lined up some of house music's great talent. Todd and Baron formed the band after meeting at the Nottingham University. The band's sound incorporates soul music, disco and house music. By 2002 the band expanded to include bassist Tim Davies, percussionist Mav Kendricks, and vocalist Danielle Moore. Todd explained the origin of the band name: "A flat mate of mine had a record called 'loco pinga' which roughly translates to Crazy Penis, we were going to call ourselves loco pinga but once we told people that, they liked crazy penis better for the shock value.” They were signed by Manchester label Paper Recordings and have since released six albums and several singles, starting with "Digging Deeper" in 1996. They built up a strong fanbase in Australia where they have toured several times.
